PHANTOM PREGNANCY BOOK LAUNCH

Free entry book launch of ‘Phantom pregnancy’ by best-seller Laconian academic and writer Dr John Vasilakakos. This book which is an auto-fiction was listed as “one of the best prose-books in Greece in 2023”.

The author will speak on how and why his book came to existence and what its theme is all about.

The following speakers will also talk about the writer and his work:

– Chris Paikopoulos (President of the Pallaconian Brotherhood). He will present the writer’s CV.

– Barbara Johnson (Librarian, responsible for the Greek books collection of Merri-bek libraries). She will speak on Dr Vasilakakos’ contribution to the Australian multicultural literature and English-language literature generally.

– Dimitris Troaditis (Poet-writer and journalist). He will examine the writer’s magnum opus Phantom pregnancy.

– Christos Niaros (Poet, newspaper contributor). He will read a passage from Vasilakakos’ book, based on the hero’s journey of self-knowledge to Laconia.

RAISING BILINGUAL CHILDREN IN MELBOURNE

Pharos Alliance will host its third annual parent seminar on Raising Bilingual Children.

Led by Professor Joseph Lo Bianco, President of Pharos Alliance and a leading expert in language education, the seminar aims to equip parents with practical strategies to foster the use of Greek at home. Through research-based insights and interactive activities, attendees will learn how to support their children’s bilingual development and help strengthen the intergenerational transmission of Modern Greek.

A Greek wine tasting event at Prince Wine Store, taking you on a vinous journey thousands of years in the making.

Greece is a country that has an incredibly rich and diverse history with the grape growing and wine making dating back more than six millennia.

Today Greece has between 200 & 300 of them, with only around 80 that have been bottled and sold commercially.

EXHIBITION: GREEK COSTUME – TRADITION AND LIFE

An exhibition of traditional and everyday Greek clothing made and worn by our families and ancestors.

The costumes in the exhibition were donated to the Greek Museum of Adelaide by Greek immigrants who came to Australia.

Some of the costumes are donated by museums located in Greece and were donated as recognition and support.

A launch will be held on Tuesday June 3, opened formally by Dr Alexandra Theodoropoulou, the Consul General of Greece in SA. At this day will be served: wine, coffee, tea, soft drinks, snacks and baked sweets. Free entrance.

Adelaide’s annual multi-disciplinary arts festival dedicated to the maintenance, development, promotion and celebration of Hellenic links in the Arts, and their rich and diverse Australian manifestations. From March to May.

Meraki Music Workshops: Try some singing. Learn to sing and play beautiful Greek songs. Bring an instrument to jam. Dance to the rhythms (Until July).

DANCE. Done Differently: Presentation on early 20th Century innovators in Modern Dance & the Greek Ideal, presented by Joanna Tsalikis.

The Timeless Homeric “Odyssey”: A free discussion on The Odyssey, presented by Chrysoula Melissinaki, Mphil (Master in Philosophy , University of Crete).

Hellenic Dreaming: Launch of the book “Hellenic Dreaming: Greek-Australian Stories” edited by Dr Helen Vatsikopoulos. Hear from her and two contributors: Kay Pavlou and Professor Martha Augoustinos. The launch will also include the announcement of the prize winners for the High School Student essay competition reflecting on growing up as third and fourth generation Greek Australians.
