White Night Melbourne is inspired by the international Nuit Blanche movement, an all-night, free cultural event with visual art, illuminations, music, food, theatre, sport, fashion, film, design and performances on display. It is a unique event running from 7.00 pm to 7.00 am, and is held within the centre of Melbourne, with activities in city streets, parklands, laneways, public spaces and cultural institutions. Within two years it has grown to attract large crowds over a full 12 hour period, allowing visitors to choose the most suitable arrival time.

The majority of the program is suitable for a general audience and White Night Melbourne is an event that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Some venues have an age restriction which is identified on individual program listings on the website. Signs for film screenings with a 15+ rating or higher will be displayed on the night at event locations if applicable.

White Night Melbourne can be enjoyed in nine precincts across Melbourne from Southbank Boulevard to Victoria Street and Melbourne Museum, and from Elizabeth Street to Russell Street, as well as along the banks of the Yarra River. It features more than 90 free cultural events and activities- most of which have free admission, except for some ticketed events which will be marked on individual listings on the website along with booking details.

Arts Centre Melbourne, Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Melbourne Museum, National Gallery of Victoria (St Kilda Road and Federation Square), and the State Library of Victoria will be offering special programming, while more roads will remain closed by the city authorities to provide attendees with more space and options to journey through White Night. There will be no projections or activities scheduled, though, for the Flinders Street Station intersection and on the station itself, to allow better movement of people through precincts in these areas. Most venues and streets are wheelchair accessible and accessibility needs will be clearly indicated on individual program website pages.

In the My Night Account section, accessible on the home page, attendees can create their own itinerary for the night, save favourite events, invite their friends and family to join and register for the White Night Melbourne e-newsletter.
