“Laconophile” Professor Paul Cartledge will present an online lecture entitled, Ancient Sparta: Myths versus Reality on Thursday 7 April as part of the Greek History and Culture Seminars series by the Greek Community of Melbourne.

A specialist on Athens and Sparta in the Classical age, Prof Cartledge will look at the myth and reality of ancient Sparta whose legend was fostered by the Spartans themselves and continued by the “lakonizers” to the present day.

Prof Cartledge, is the AG Leventis Senior Research Fellow of Clare College, and formerly the inaugural AG Leventis Professor of Greek Culture in the University of Cambridge. His chosen field of study is Athens and Sparta in the Classical Age.

He has written, co-authored, edited or co-edited 30 books including Democracy: A Life (2018), Thebes: the forgotten city of Ancient Greece (2020). He was the chief consultant for the BBC TV series The Greeks and the Channel 4 series The Spartans.

An Honorary citizen of Modern Sparta and recipient of the Gold Cross of the Order of Honour, Prof Cartledge was recently made a Commander of the Order of Honour (Ταξιάρχης τῆς Τιμῆς) for “his contribution to Greece’s stature abroad”.

The lecture which will begin at 7pm, will be delivered through the GCM platform on Facebook and Youtube.
