Welcome to the Neos Kosmos guide to Greek events on around Australia.

Starting in Melbourne, the city’s very own ensemble Estudiantina of Melbourne is returning home to perform a moving tribute concert titled ‘Songs of the Soul’ on July 25.

Showcasing storytelling of early 20th-century Greek music, this performance honours of two of the most influential voices in Greek urban music, Rita Abadzi and Kostas Roukounas.

Both were pioneers of Greek laiko and rebetiko, and their songs remain as powerful today as they were nearly a century ago, having a deep connection to everyday life and migration stories.

This is a featured event of our Greek Guide, which you can visit on our site for more information about events, times and bookings.

Estudiantina of Melbourne will also be in Belgrave on August 30 for ‘A Greek Night at Sooki.

This weekend though, you can enjoy a free show in Brunswick by another rebetiko band Anatreptix, before they head off to Canberra to support Merak Machine.

Aboriginal Greek Australian theatre sensation Zoy Frangos is paying homage to Elvis Presley in Sun Rise: The Story of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.

The show not only honours Elvis but also celebrates Sun Records and the pioneering African American artists who helped shape the sound of rock ‘n’ roll.

But it also holds a deeply personal meaning for Frangos. It happens to be the last show his father saw him perform before he passed away.
