To honour and give thanks to the special women in our lives, the Alphington Grammar School community held a fundraiser last week to celebrate Mother’s Day with a high tea.

The school’s Andrianakos Centre was transformed with festive decorations and an abundance of food, catering to over 250 guests.

Making a special appearance from Canberra were Greece’s ambassador to Australia, Haris Dafaranos, along with his wife Eyvah, who officially opened the event.

Also attending on the day were executive members of the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria, dignitaries, media and other special guests.

With all funds raised being put towards the Peter MacCallum hospital and paediatric cancer research, the key guest speaker was Elly Symonds, whose eldest son has been diagnosed with cancer three times.

Giving a touching and honest speech, Ms Symonds reflected on her personal journey and the challenges she faced during this time.

“Elly shared with us all, that we can find resilience and hope in the toughest of times and against all odds,” said Dr Vivianne Nikou, principal of Alphington Grammar.

“Alphington Grammar School has a big heart and our community understands the importance of demonstrating to the next generations that a strong social conscience, and contributing to research and those less fortunate than ourselves, is important.”
