Archbishop Ieronymos, the head of the Church of Greece, has slammed cohabitation agreements, which grant couples living together similar rights to those who are married, describing the pact as “a poor imitation” of marriage.

In a letter to Justice Minister Nikos Paraskevopoulos last week, Ieronymos described the cohabitation agreement as “a neoliberal rewarding of irresponsibility in interpersonal relations which it relegates to a simple transaction.”

As for a bill that foresees extending the cohabitation pact to include same-sex couples, Ieronymos asked whether the state was planning to pave the way for provisions for “the homosexual family”.
