A few hundred asylum seekers have been relocated from Lesvos to the mainland in an effort to ease overcrowding in the island’s camps.
The state-run facilities are struggling to host the wave of refugees who arrived through the Aegean.
Some 8,500 asylum seekers are still stranded on the island, living in dismal conditions, which results in frequent violent incidents taking place.
The issue has not been resolved, despite the EU-Turkey deal that looked to shut down the influx of refugees and the island’s inhabitants have held protests, condemning the EU policies that turned Lesvos into a quasi-prison for migrant refugees.
