Tuesday night’s game reaffirmed Victoria’s reputation as the nation’s sporting capital, with over 33,500 people turning out for the friendly between the Greek National Football Team and the Socceroos.

“The GCM (Greek Community of Melbourne) congratulates the Victorian Government and in particular the Minister for Sport John Eren for making this match happen,” said GCM President, Bill Papastergiadis.

Hosted at Etihad Stadium, Greece stole the show with an impressive goal from the half way line by defender Ioannis Maniatis.

However aside from the sporting prowess on show on the field, the event was also a chance to showcase the best that the Greek community and culture have to offer, resulting in an exciting carnival atmosphere that preceded and continued through the event populated by families and children.

“The event is a great example of this city’s cosmopolitan and multicultural identity. The pre-match dance groups and entertainment on the stadium concourse and the carnival atmosphere in the stadium are a great testament to major events held in this city,” said Mr Papastergiadis.

There were disruptions during the night however, with a handful of irresponsible patrons illegally lighting flares.

While the GCM openly condemned these actions, Director of the Greek Centre Jorge Menidis says this should not take away from the well-executed event.

“Last night over 33,000 people attended a great sporting and cultural event. The actions of 2 or 3 irresponsible people should not cloud this fact,” he said.
