The Ellipsis has set a new record becoming the first non-North American side to take out honours at the sports US Open.

Ranked 12th out of 12 teams, the team competed in the mixed division championship, led by captain Catherine Phillips.

The non-contact sport – described as a cross between netball and rugby with a frisbee – comprises seven players-a-side vying to score goals on either side of a rectangular field, much like a try in rugby, and like netball players cannot run with the frisbee. But unlike most competitive sports there is no adjudicating referee/umpire, rather players negotiate with their opponents when they feel a foul is warranted.

“You have to be really fit, it’s very high intensity,” Ms Phillips said.

“You learn to negotiate well, you learn to play fairly, and it’s all about being fair and respecting your opponent.”

The team donated half of its $2,000 prize money to Ultimate Peace, a charity that runs ultimate frisbee camps for Jewish, Arab and Palestinian children in the West Bank and Israel.
