One in four Greeks has a bicycle but only 3 percent use it as one of their main modes of transport and just 32 per cent of owners have used their bikes over the last 12 months, according to a survey carried out on behalf of the Greek branch of WWF.

According to the Public Issue poll, 27 per cent of bike owners said that the lack of infrastructure, including cycling lanes, puts them off using their bikes more often, while 23 per cent said they are deterred because of concerns about their safety.

Also, 15 per cent of Athenians said they have never ridden a bicycle, while 40 per cent said they have not used a bicycle since childhood.
