Thessaloniki Mayor Yiannis Boutaris is among 26 mayors shortlisted for the World Mayor Prize 2014 bestowed by the independent City Mayors Foundation.

The foundation awards the prize every two years to mayors making outstanding contributions to their communities. The prize was established in 2004 with Edi Rama, then mayor of Tirana, Albania, earning the first award. Greece’s Dora Bakoyiannis, former Athens Mayor, won the award the following year.

Besides Boutaris, the mayors of Calgary, Lampedusa, Izmir, Liverpool, Bordeaux, Houston, Seoul and Sydney, among others, are competing for the prize this year.

The winner will be determined through public online voting that concludes in October.
