Draft legislation foreseeing the hiring of 12,000 civil servants this year is due to be submitted to parliament and voted on this week.
The hirings are broadly in line with the commitments the previous government had made to Greece’s lenders. The midterm fiscal plan foresaw that 11,107 people would be hired this year. The total annual cost of the hirings planned by the current coalition is 72 million euros.
The 12,000 hirings will consist of 3,900 civil servants fired or placed in a labour reserve by the previous government, 1,700 former municipal policemen and 6,000 applicants who have passed the civil service entrance test but have yet to be taken on.
