A coroner's statement confirmed on Tuesday that singer George Michael died of a heart condition.

The 53-year-old was found dead in his Goring-on-Thames home on Christmas Day as a result of natural causes, which senior coroner for Oxfordshire County, Darren Salter said included dilated cardiomyopathy with myocarditis and a fatty liver, Fairfax Media reported.

Dilated cardiomyopathy develops when the heart's ventricles enlarge and weaken, causing the heart muscle to work harder, over time reducing its ability to pump blood. While myocarditis is inflammation of the heart muscle.

The buildup of fat in the liver can be caused by consumption of alcohol, but has also been linked to being overweight or obese.

Mr Salter's statement did not specify the cause in Michael's case however.

Due to the death being natural, the statement also revealed that "the investigation is being discontinued and there is no need for an inquest or any further enquiries."

"No further updates will be provided and the family requests the media and public respect their privacy," Mr Salter added.
