As part of the July-December program of the Greek Film Society of Sydney, the movies Despina (Δέσποινα, 1990, 55΄) and Sayome (Σαγιόμι, 2011, 56΄) will be screened on Thursday 16 October.

Directed by Sotiris Goritsas and Nikos Dayandas, the two award-winning films are about women.

The first is a fictional story about a young woman in a rural Greek town who sees her chance to escape to the city when she meets a young army conscript.

The second, a documentary about a Japanese woman who also left her small rural village to share her life with a Cretan seaman. After years of assimilating into Greek society, she revisits her difficult family past in Japan.
