A bill allowing prisoners with serious disabilities to be released early is due to be submitted to Parliament this week despite objections from some opposition parties.
The would-be legislation foresees prisoners characterised with a 67 per cent or more disability being released early unless they have been handed life sentences, in which case they will only be allowed out if they have at least 80 percent disability.
The government says the draft law is needed because Greek jails are overcrowded and do not have adequate facilities to cater for disabled prisoners. Opposition parties have voiced objections to the proposal, especially as it would lead to November 17 terrorist Savvas Xeros, who has been in jail since 2011, being freed due to serious health problems.
