There will be some 1,500 fewer places at Greek universities in the new academic year in the wake of overcrowding during the last few months, Kathimerini understands.

Sources said that Education Minister Aristides Baltas has decided there will be 69,000 places available compared to more than 70,300 last September. The country’s main institutions will absorb the lion’s share of the reduction.

Baltas has yet to decide on whether to allow students to transfer between universities, a policy which was partly responsible for overcrowding at the most popular institutions. University entrance exams are due to begin on May 20.
