Tensions reached new heights at the Moria reception centre on Lesvos on Monday afternoon, after a protest by migrants drawing attention to the overcrowded living conditions got out of hand.

The unrest was said to have started by a small group of migrants outside the pre-departure centre.

In their attempt to guard the centre, police were pelted with stones and fired back at the migrants with tear gas.

Meanwhile two large tents and two prefabricated buildings were set one fire.

According to a report by Kathimerini, migrants were said to have been blocking the fire services from entering the premises by throwing stones at both the fire brigade and fire engine.

There are currently more than 14,000 migrants stranded across Levsos and various Greek islands near Turkey awaiting deportation as the agreement between the European Union and Turkey does not permit them to travel to the Greek mainland.

Many migrants in the Moria camp have been at the facility for over 12 months.

Police have not reported any injuries and there were no reports of immediate arrests.
