With tourists trying to get more bang for their buck, or Euro in this case, more tourists are turning away from the usual popular holiday destinations in favour of islands popular amongst the locals in countries like Greece, the trend particularly noticeable in Germany.

Last month the growth of German holidaymakers continued to Greece, with Traveltainment’s figures showing strong growth. Kos’ bookings were up by 25 per cent, Crete’s Heraklion was up 9 per cent, and Rhodes saw a slight growth of 2 per cent.

According to package holiday booking figures for January, neighbouring Turkey is also attracting a larger number of German holidaymakers, with sales particularly on the rise to Antalya, taking out the top spot in the 10 largest destination airports.

Meanwhile, Egypt is also faring well, with Hurghada’s bookings increasing by 61 per cent.

Spain is one of the destinations particularly suffering from the trend, with demand for islands such as Majorca decreasing.
