Alison Brie at the Golden Globes red carpet, wearing a dress by Vassilis Zoulias.

09 January 2018

In what was one of the most political and emotionally charged awards shows of the season, the 2018 Golden Globes made history for becoming a platform for the Hollywood elite to make a statement about sexual harassment and gender equality in the industry. It was a rare image to see all the major stars of cinema and television, make an appearance on the red carpet wearing black, with most men sporting the 'Time's Up' pin. What is even rarer, though, was to see a Greek signature on one of the black dresses that stood out. Worn by Alison Brie, who was nominated for her performance at the Netflix show 'Glow', the long, wavy strapless dress, which incorporated a pair of trousers - which accentuated the feminist tone of the event - was a creation of Athens based designer Vassilis Zoulias. Speaking to the Greek edition of Marie Claire magazine, Zoulias shared the backstory that led his name being the answer to the stereotypical question: "Who are you wearing?"

It all started when Zoulias met Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, the famous pair of fashion photographers, at the wedding of a mutual Greek American friend, for which he had designed the dress. When the designer expressed his wish to have one of his collections photographed by the pair, they invited him to their studio in New York. When he did, his creations gained the attention of Christina Ehrlich, deemed by 'The Hollywood Reporter' as one of "the 25 Most Powerful Stylists in Hollywood", who happened to stop by the studio on that day. A handful of her clients graced the Golden Globe red carpet on Monday, most notably Penelope Cruz, Greta Gerwig (whose film 'Lady Bird' won the best motion picture (musical/ comedy) award), Allison Williams, Laura Dern (who also wore a Vassilis Zoulias creation at another event) and of course, Brie, who was voted 'Best Dressed' by the popular magazine 'UsWeekly'. Posting the photo of the actress in the Zoulias creation on her own instagram account, Ehrlich commented: "She wears the pants!"
