Grandmothers Against Detention of Refugee Children invites the Greek Australian community to a rally on Saturday 25 July at noon outside the ALP National Conference at the Melbourne Convention Centre.

GADRC is joining with the Refugee Action Collective and Labor for Refugees to call for an end to the bipartisan refugee cruelty.

“This rally is a call for change, and a demand for justice for refugees,” member executive Pamela Jonas said, stressing that the turn-back of boats jeopardises the lives of those refugees on board.

“We need policies that show clear intention to close offshore detention centres and to process in the Australian community all people who seek asylum in Australia.”

Grandmothers will be urging delegates to vote for policies acknowledging that Australia has responsibility for the welfare of asylum seekers taken to Nauru and Manus Island.

“We’ll be asking the attendees at the Australian Labor Party National Conference, our fellow Australians, to vote for policies that do not allow the inhumane export of babies and their families to the terrible conditions on Nauru,” added co-chair Clare Forbes.

“We’ll be urging them to vote for implementing the recommendations of Gillian Triggs and the Human Rights Commission,” said Pamela Jonas from Grandmothers Against Detention of Refugee Children.
