A 35-year-old man has been charged with the alleged murder of his elderly neighbour Donato Galgano late last week.

The incident took place near the intersection of Murray and Gilbert roads, Preston late in the afternoon on 10 July.

According to reports, an argument ensued between Tony Papadimitriou and Galgano before escalating into a violent dispute.

Emergency crews were called and passers-by tried giving first-aid to the victim until paramedics arrived, but Galgano, 68, died shortly afterwards suffering a stab wound to the chest.

Papadimitriou was arrested at the scene and charged with murder.

He appeared at the Melbourne’s Magistrates’ Court last Saturday opting not to apply for bail.

Police said they were investigating what triggered the alleged altercation and confirmed that the two neighbours were known for having regular quarrels.

“We are aware that there has been some disputes between the two parties,” Senior Sergeant Justin Goldsmith said.

Papadimitriou was also scheduled to appear in court last Tuesday.
