New South Wales police officer Detective Sergeant James Asimacopoulos has been rewarded for his efforts and bravery in the state’s protective services.
Asimacopoulos was named 2015 Rotary Police Officer of the Year at the Rotary Clubs of NSW Police Officer of the Year Awards, for his role in the deadly Martin Place siege in Sydney on 15 December 2014, being one of the first officers on the scene and risking his life by taking position next to a window to feed information to other patrolling officers, with an armed offender inside the building.
Along with his Police Officer of the Year award, Asimacopoulos was also named Field Operations Police Officer of the Year.
New South Wales Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione congratulated the Detective Sergeant for his hard work, including his efforts with underprivileged youth in Sydney’s Kings Cross area and in instigating the Strike Force Fairbairn – targeting the supply and demand of narcotics in the Woolloomooloo area.
Scipione also stressed the importance of all police personnel protecting the community.
“Every member of the New South Wales Police Force performs an incredible and often challenging job each day.
“That’s why tonight is an important opportunity to not only recognise the extraordinary achievements of the nominees, but to also acknowledge their colleagues, who demonstrate dedication in their duties every single day,” he said.
The awards were handed out last Friday.
