Metropolit Seraphim of Piraeus

13 April 2017

Greek Orthodox Bishop, Metropolit Seraphim of Piraeus has caused controversy by urging Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to convert to Orthodoxy with Russian President Vladimir Putin as his godfather. And no, it's not a joke.

In a 37-page letter to Erdogan written in Greek, Metropolit Seraphim asks the Turkish leader to denounce his Islamic faith and be baptised in the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople.

"If you want to save yourself and your family you should convert to Greek Orthodox Church, the only real faith," Seraphim writes, reports Keep Talking Greece.

"We propose and we advise you to come to the arms of the Greek Orthodox Church before the end of your life on earth.

"Otherwise, you will unfortunately find yourself, your family and your people in the same place where Allah, Muhammad and his followers are, ie. in the place of suffering, eternal and unending hell."

He calls on Erdogan to "repent, cry, be humble and believe in Christ," and claims that "the Holy Trinity of God will open the arms for you".

If Erdogan is to heed the Metropolit's advice, he says that the Orthodox faithful on earth and in heaven will rejoice and "the angels in heaven after your enter the true Church!"

In the extensive letter, the Bishop also analyses Greece's 400 years under Ottoman rule, the Treaty of Lausanne, Turkey's recent history and the country's efforts to join the European Union.

Despite concluding his letter with "honour, respect and honest brother love", it contains a number of remarks in which he insults the Koran, the Prophet Muhammad, and describes Islam as a sect rather than a religion.

Is like to address the above comments by saying..The Fathers, Apostles, The Scriptures are quite clear on who and what God is, What The Holy Trinity is like, Character , and personality. Just because they are monotheistic in no way means Our Gid and their god are the same.Yes..the generic term for god in Arabic is allah..but this is not to be mistaken as our God in any way.Secondly the Fathers also show by revelation exactly the estate of all who do not join themselves to Christ.Mohammad openly rejected Christ.. All false gods are described in the scriprures as demons..so.."allah-the demon ,Mohamad" and the majority of those who follow this false claim of religion..are very seriously in hell already. I think Bishop Seraphim was very couragous..and yes quite Bold.He does not fear death. What a great example.
The letter should at the very least been written in Turkish to show the Bishop made the effort to communicate in Erdogan's native language. Anyway, it's bold but unfortunately could stir up more trouble for the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople (he might not have been consulted) as well as escalate the continual, illegal and frequent Turkish flyovers and naval harassment in Greece. Another question I would dearly like to ask the Bishop - how does he know the Islamic leaders are in hell?
This Bishop says what a lot off people should say! It would become a better world. We just cannot deny it, religions and ideologies are and will not be equal.
Serafim is metropolitan of Pireas, not metropolit (this is the Russian term). As for his letter, I don't understand why he says Allah is in hell, considering Allah is simply the Arabic term for G-d, and Muslims believe in the same G-d as Christians and Jews (the difference being their interpretation of G-d)...
