The stunning beauty of the Greek islands proves to be inversely proportional to the quality of its airports services. So suggests the website “Sleepinginairports.net” with its recently released list of the world’s worst airports for 2015.

Based on a survey conducted annually, more than 25,000 travelers submitted their reviews rating the services and facilities available within the terminal, cleanliness, customer service, comfort and their overall airport experience.

On a European scale, four Greek airports feature in the not so prestigious top 10 list, but at least Greek terminals did not receive the distinction of being named “Europe’s worst airport”.

Heading the field is the French Beauvais-Tille International airport, 80 km from Paris with public transport options being scarce and expensive.

The Santorini Thira National airport comes in the second worst place, with voters complaining about the lack of chairs and eateries, while grievances about cleanliness and the security processes were not absent either.

In fact a number of visitors went to extremes in their sarcastic comments by suggesting the demolition of the premises as the only viable solution.

Next in line is Rhodes airport, followed by Heraklion.

Rhodes airport is criticised harshly for endless queues, shortage of staff and poor hygiene conditions.

Online voters made sure to point out the absence of toilet seats, soap, towels and toilet paper, while the website’s advice to those travelling through Rhodes is to be equipped with “a serious amount of patience”.

Objections about the quality of customer service are also evident in Crete’s primary airport in Heraklion, the country’s second busiest after Athens International airport.

“This is the worst airport I have ever been to. Unhelpful staff, a ridiculous system where there is mostly only one X Ray machine working”, an angry survey respondent comments.

Greek presence in the list is concluded with Corfu International airport “Ioannis Kapodistrias”, named after the first Governor of the modern Greek state.

Named sixth worst in the continent, the airport serves flights from many European cities, especially during the peak summer season between April and October.

According to a voter, prison facilities outperform it in terms of comfort, entertainment and catering standards.

The travel website “Sleepinginairports” asks from its readers every year to identify the world’s worst and best airports. First launched by a Canadian travel agent in 1996 providing tips based on merely three airport reviews, it gathered reputation within the following years and has now become an online resource for thousands of fliers.
