The presidents of the Greek communities in Cairo and Alexandria have told the Athens and Macedonian News Agency (AMNA) in Greece that the members of their communities are not planning to evacuate the country

Greek community buildings in Cairo and Alexandria have not sustained any damage and Greeks are not planning to evacuate the country, the heads of Egypt’s two largest Greek communities said on Friday.

According to Kavalis, Greeks in Cairo are not a “target” and no Egyptian has turned against foreigners and Christians. “There have been no problems with our buildings, our hospitals, churches and schools,” he stressed.

“We don’t feel unsafe,” the president of the community said, adding that the community hopes that “as little blood as possible is shed”.

Also speaking to AMNA, the president of the Greek community in Alexandria has said that the community buildings are “absolutely safe” and that the situation remains “under perfect control”.

No members of the community have expressed their wish to leave the country, Yiannis Siokas said. “Greeks are worried but stay calm,” he said, adding that Egyptians haven’t expressed themselves against Greeks or other foreigners.

Hundreds of thousands of Egyptians took to the streets on Friday after attacks by police on supporters of Egypt’s first freely elected president Mohamed Morsi, who was overthrown last month, left over 620 people dead.
