The Hawthorn Spartans couldn’t have asked for a better start to the new season, thrashing rivals Old Geelong with 102 points separating the teams.

It was a team effort, with 11 individual goalkickers sealing the win early on in the first half, leading by 48 points.

There was no pre-season woes to dampen the Spartan’s play, with the defence only conceding one goal in the first three quarters.

It was a win the Spartans were desperate to achieve, falling at the hands of the same team two years ago in the Grand Final.

The team will have it’s first home game this week, playing Prahran Assumption on Saturday at 1pm at Rathmines Road Reserve. They’re expecting a big crowd as they will be unveiling their 2013 premiership flag.
