Hugh Jackman is in early discussions to take on the lead role in the newest version of Homer’s The Odyssey, under Francis Lawrence’s direction.

Lawrence is responsible for the blockbuster film Constantine and has since been behind Water for Elephants and the final three Hunger Games films. For the new dystopian movie project, he reunites with Lionsgate.

Jackman is expected to play the part of Odysseus, who undertakes an epic, decade-long journey home to his family after the fall of Troy.
The story might be split into two films, while Lionsgate studios aim to start shooting early next year from a script by Mockingjay screenwriter Peter Craig.

Odysseus is not the only new role for the Aussie star as this Christmas will see him take on the villain role as Captain Hook in Joe Wright’s Pan. Jackman is also part of the new sports biopic Eddie the Eagle and high-profile Christian film Apostle Paul.
