Greek Australian pastry chef George Diakomichalis, who heads the multi-award winning business Kalymnos Pastries in Adelaide, has landed his very own television series titled It’s All Greek To Me.

Interspersed with feature stories on how migrants have managed to keep their traditions alive while living as proud Australians, the fourth generation Greek from Kalymnos has already filmed a series of episodes in which he cooks with prominent and successful Greek family individuals who migrated to Australia.

“To me, this series is the perfect opportunity to show everyone what Greek cooking, tradition and culture is all about; through each episode my aim is to keep traditional Greek recipes alive and, most importantly, inspire future generations to follow in their ancestors’ footsteps and start spreading the love about Greek traditions, Greek heritage and of course, Greek cooking,” George tells Neos Kosmos.

“My ultimate wish is for younger generations to develop respect towards those generations of migrants who, through traumatic past experiences, managed to build a better future for their families on the other side of the world,” says Diakomichalis, who learnt the art of cooking back in 1995 under the guidance of his grandfather and two uncles in his family’s patisserie on his parent’s island of Kalymnos; an island which he often visits when hosting hospitality tours for fellow Australians.

“Cooking is my passion and this is my life and what I really love doing,” says George, who has also been conducting cooking classes at the KP premises for the past six years and hosting annual food demonstrations at numerous festivals throughout Australia and overseas.

In addition to all this, the former banker now heads a Greek buffet in one of Malaysia’s five-star hotels.

In the initial episode of the eight-part season, which is scheduled to air every Saturday at 4.30 pm on local SA television station Channel 7, Diakomichalis reflects on the migration story of his own family in which he presents his parents, Nick and Popi, cooks traditional dishes and speaks about their favourite home island, Kalymnos.

The It’s all Greek To Me episodes were filmed in collaboration with local production company TAV Productions and Channel 7 Adelaide and are also progressively made available online at www.au.tv.yahoo.com/plus7/its-all-greek-to-me/
