As one of the elite in the fashion world, Jean Paul Gaultier has a lot to draw on for inspiration.

Hailing from one of the most fashion forward places in the world, Paris, you’d think he wouldn’t have to look far, but the Parisian designer has made no secret of how much he adores Greece.

Often seen vacationing in the Greek islands, the designer taken a lot from Greece’s natural colours and its celebrities.

One of his muses was none other than Melina Mercouri. He was fascinated by her presence as a politician and enamoured with her sense of style.

“I cannot forget the black dress Melina Mercouri wore in the film Never on Sunday,” Gautier said recently.’

He even designed a mariniere and a T-shirt for Mercouri’s foundation to help them raise funds.

Gaultier has also designed for close friends, Greek singer Anna Vissi and former international model Vicky Kaya.

Now, some of Gaultier’s most famous work is in Australia for the ‘The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier’ exhibition.

Displayed at the National Gallery of Victoria one can see some very distinctive costumes and haute-couture creations in classic blue and white stripes, inspired by the Greek flag and navy ensembles, among other ethnic influenced pieces.

The retrospective features more than 140 superbly crafted garments in addition to photographs, sketches, stage costumes, excerpts from runway shows, film, television screenings and installations, spanning his creativity over 40 years.

Fans will be able to see the first dress created by the designer in 1971 to his latest haute-couture and ready-to-wear collections, bustiers, costumes worn by Madonna, Beyoncé and couture dresses worn by Kylie Minogue, Nicole Kidman and Cate Blanchett.

Those who come on a Friday will also be treated to special musical events, with some big Australian and international names from the alternative and rock music scene performing live.

The exhibition will run until Sunday 8 February at the National Gallery of Victoria, 180 St Kilda Road, Melbourne.
