The Greek Embassy celebrated Greek Independence Day with a traditional gathering at the Ambassador of Greece’s residence in Canberra.

A number of guests attended the celebration, including Australian politicians Nickolas Varvaris, Maria Vamvakinou and Melissa Parke, along with various other diplomats and representatives of the community.

A ceremony followed, honouring distinguished members of the Greek Australian community, including an award of great merit bestowed upon Judge Emilios Kyrou of the Victorian Supreme Court.

Federal MP Nickolas Varvaris and chairman of the Parliamentary Friendship Group Greece-Australia also addressed those present, recognising the long and close relationship between the two countries.

Master builder of replica ships Dionyssis Paraskevatos was also recognised for his generous donation to the embassy of a hand-made trireme, followed by the opening of George Raftopoulos’ exhibition ‘An Unconventional Dreamer’.
