The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) under certain prerequisites are in favour of giving the Hellenic Diaspora the opportunity to vote in Greek elections.
Dimitris Koutsoubas, the General Secretary of KKE in an interview on 3ΧΥ Radio Hellas of Melbourne, stated that his party is in favour of having a single electorate for the entire
Hellenic Diaspora where 3 to 5 MPs representing the Diaspora could be elected in the 300 seat Greek Parliament.
The political choice as to who is to govern the country should belong to those who live permanently in Greece, he said and not to people who might have lost contact with the everyday social and economic realities of Greece. There are many political, legal and economic factors that have to be considered in order to resolve this issue, he claimed, but the KKE won’t be negative in finding a solution that takes into consideration the creation of a singular diaspora electorate and the election of a small (limited) number of MPs from the Diaspora.
In the same radio interview Mr. Koutsoumpas also stated his opposition to Greece taxing incomes earned by Greeks living and working permanently abroad, for example by renting their apartment or a house when they are not in Greece.
