Despite the slight hiccup of a wardrobe malfunction mid-match, Kyrgios managed to secure his place in the third round of the Australian Open over Pablo Cuevas.

The 20-year-old beat his Uruguayan opponent, ranked 41st, in straight sets 6-4, 7-5, 7-6 (7/2) at Hisense Arena.

During the match, Kyrgios asked the umpire if he could change his shorts, claiming that the pockets were not deep enough to hold balls while serving.

It was when he returned that the real magic happened, managing to break Cuevas’ serve four times and smashing 50 winners.

“Just a bit of a mix-up before the game. I guess it will be fixed by the next round,” Kyrgios said during the post-game press conference.

“I thought the first set was really key, had to get the first set,” he said. “I thought he was pretty high level. We both played well from the back. He served really well.”

Relieved to get get through the second round in straight sets, Friday night will see Kyrgios play Czech Tomas Berdych, currently ranked 6th.

“I’ve played him a couple times. He’s going to be wanting to win as much as I’m going to be wanting to win, so it’s going to be tough,” Kyrgios said.

“The crowd’s going to be crazy. They all love Berdych. He has a massive fan base. He’s one of the greatest players right now. It’s going to be a really good match.”

Kyrgios made it through to the quarter-finals last year, where he lost to Englishman Andy Murray.
