A new era began for the people of Kato Pyrgos and Limnitis on Thursday as the Limnitis crossing point, northwest of Cyprus, was opened during a ceremony by President of the Republic Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu.

The opening of the crossing point allows civilian traffic to flow again through the buffer zone running across the area.

The Limnitis/Yesilirmak crossing point will be the seventh such gateway facilitating movement between the two main communities of Cyprus.

Cyprus President Demetris Christofias expressed hope that the opening of the Kato Pyrgos – Limnitis crossing point will give impetus to the further strengthening of the cooperation between the organized groups and ordinary people of the region who have played a significant role in the efforts to make the opening possible.

Addressing the opening ceremony of the Kato Pyrgos – Limnitis crossing point, Christofias stressed at the same time that “Our primary aim was and remains reaching a comprehensive solution which will completely normalize the situation and create such conditions that will enable Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots to move freely in every corner of their common homeland, the united Federal Cyprus.”
