Sculptor Peter Corlett has been working hard at reaching the August deadline for the Lemnos memorial unveiling.

The artist has completed both clay life-size models for the memorial which features an Australian nurse stationed at Lemnos and an injured solider.

In the final unveiling, the memorial will show the Australian nurse protecting the ill Anzac soldier returned from the peninsula, on top of a rough stone base, reflective of the Lemnian earth.

Mr Corlett is now in the process of casting the clay models in bronze to finalise the statues.

He will then work on ageing the stone plinth the two statues will stand on to make it look like ancient ruins.

Mr Corlett says both statues have been created to show the likeness of real Lemnos nurses and Australian soldiers that he found thanks to photos from the era.

The statues will be part of a larger memorial area in Albert Park which will include flagpoles, places for wreaths for commemorative events, and an information stand which will explain the Lemnos Gallipoli connection in detail.

The memorial is thanks to the Lemnos Gallipoli Commemorative Committee, which has been fundraising extensively to see the memorial come to fruition.

The committee has just recently received permission to build on the site, and has had its permit approved by the Port Philip City Council.

The August 8 unveiling will coincide with the date the Australian nurses first arrived in Lemnos 100 years ago.
