Nearly 10 days after being crowned party leader, Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Thursday unveiled New Democracy’s shadow cabinet.
The 31-member group – which includes seven women – was seen by analysts as an attempt to balance competing factions, while putting together a combative profile vis-a-vis the leftist-led government.
Former alternate finance minister Christos Staikouras was given the finance portfolio while Dora Bakoyannis was named shadow minister for foreign affairs and defense. Bakoyannis, who is Mitsotakis’s sister, served as foreign minister during Costas Karamanlis’s administration.
Former tourism minister Olga Kefaloyianni will take over the development portfolio while Makis Voridis will be in charge of justice and internal affairs.
Theodoros Fortsakis was appointed shadow education minister while former public order minister Vassilis Kikilias will coordinate ND’s migration policy.
Meanwhile, Nikos Georgiadis, an ex-MP who was slated to become ND’s secretary of strategic planning left the party following the launch of a judicial probe into allegations of sex offenses, which he strenuously denies.
