Socceroos star midfielder Aaron Mooy has been loaned out to English Championship League club Huddersfield Town for 12 months, just days after signing with EPL giant Manchester City.

According to Mooy’s agent Paddy Dominguez, the 12-month loan deal is part of a strategy to develop Mooy’s career by giving him the experience of playing regularly in a tough league under an experienced coach.

Huddersfield’s coach is David Wagner, formerly Jurgen Klopp’s assistant at Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund and who remains a close friend with Klopp, now manager at Liverpool.

“I’m delighted to join Huddersfield Town FC ahead of what I’m sure will be a really exciting season and I can’t wait to get started,” Mooy said of the move.

“The Championship is a really tough competition and provides with a good challenge for the next stage of my career.
“I’m looking forward to meeting my new team mates and to working with the boss David Wagner. Huddersfield are a progressive club and are an ideal fit for me to achieve my goals for the coming year.”

If Mooy can get regular game time with the Terriers, that bodes well for the Socceroos in what will be a challenging World Cup qualifying campaign beginning in September. He can hope for much more game time over the 48-game English Championship season than he could have expected either at star-studded Manchester City under Pep Guadiola, or in the 27-game season of the A-League.

At Huddersfield, he joins another Socceroo full back Jason Davidson, who spent the last season at the club.

The move to England is the second stint in the UK for the 25-year-old Mooy. He spent 2009-2010 as a youth scholar at Bolton Wanderers before moving to the Scottish Premier League, where he spent two seasons for 21 appearances with St Mirren. From there he returned to his home town of Sydney to become an inaugural member of new A-League club Western Sydney Wanderers in 2013, before joining Melbourne City, where he became one of its marquee players.

The attacking midfielder has made 16 appearances for the Socceroos for five goals and is an integral part of Ange Postecoglou’s Socceroos team.
