The gap between SYRIZA and New Democracy has narrowed since last month but the leftists are still 8.5 percentage points ahead of the conservatives, according to a new Public Issue poll.

Published in Saturday’s Efimerida ton Syntakton, the poll put SYRIZA on 35.5 per cent and New Democracy on 27. Since last month’s survey, support for the opposition party has dropped by half a point but Prime Minister Antonis Samaras’s party has increased its rating by 2 percentage points. To Potami is in third place on 10.5 per cent, followed by the Communist Party on 6.5, PASOK and Golden Dawn on 6, Independent Greeks on 3 and Democratic Left (DIMAR) on just 1 per cent. Support for other parties totals 4.5 per cent.

If this was the result of the next general elections, SYRIZA would gain 144 seats and New Democracy 71. The proportion of Greeks who think there will be early elections rose from 54 to 63 per cent over the last month.
