One day after Recep Tayyip Erdogan pressed for a two-state solution on Cyprus, President Nicos Anastasiades expressed disappointment over comments made by the new Turkish president while placing his hopes of reaching a settlement on the European Union and Nicosia’s strategic partners.
During a visit to the Turkish-occupied northern Cyprus, Erdogan reaffirmed his support for the Turkish-Cypriot administration and said the only way forward was a two-state solution of two equal entities.
He also denied receiving a letter from Anastasiades, which was reportedly delivered to him at his presidential inauguration ceremony in Ankara last week by Greek Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos.
“Maybe he deemed that such an acknowledgement would equal recognition of the President of the Cypriot Republic,” Anastasiades said.
In the letter, Anastasiades reportedly expressed hope that Erdogan would make a personal contribution to reaching a peace settlement.
