Oakleigh Cannons might have had some large bumps along the way this season, but they are looking like they’re turning things around.

Last Tuesday, the Cannons managed to draw a respectable 2-2 with one of the league’s best, Melbourne Knights, and scored their first win of the season last Saturday with Avondale FC.

The results are some consolation to fans who rightfully expected the club to hit the ground running after an amazing season in 2014.

Four straight losses might have made a fair few people worried, but not in Oakleigh’s board.

Chairman Kon Kavalakis says he and the board are confident that the team is on the right path and has full trust in coach Miron Beilberg.

“You can’t judge Miron on a few results, his credentials and his resume say it all, he’s coached 150 A-league games, he’s coached national league teams with Melbourne Knights and Heidelberg,” Kavalakis tells Neos Kosmos.

“We’re very confident that the team will turn around and start getting positive results because we’re confident we’ve got a good side and we’ve got one of the best qualified coaches in Australia in the NPL.”

Tuesday’s result was thanks to half-time substitute Liam Boland who scored both of Oakleigh’s late goals. The match had Beilberg saying the team had “turned a corner”.

Kavalakis believes the team will start carving out more competitive results “sooner rather than later” and feels a contributing factor to the team’s unfortunate start was that it was playing so many away games.

Monday’s match against Northcote City will be the first time in six matches Oakleigh will play on home soil.

“Six away games is a contributing factor,” Kavalakis admits.

The next week for Oakleigh is going to be a very challenging task.

Monday’s match will be followed by a Wednesday FFA Cup match against Richmond and then another heated Greek derby against Heidelberg United.

The jam-packed fixture is a chance for Oakleigh to show whether the team has enough depth for the long run till the finals.
