Jack Edwards Reserve has been the site of a shocking vandalism attack, which has left the pitch damaged and unusable.

Taking place last Sunday morning, a security guard in the vicinity contacted both the police and fire departments at 4.20 am when he found the pitch alight.

The recently redone pitch, funded by the council and said to be worth $1.3 million, has been left with an estimated $50,000 worth of damage.

It is believed those committing the crime spread petrol on the site and let off fire crackers, leaving seven burnt patches with the largest measuring 3 metres by 5 metres.

Mayor of Monash, Paul Klisaris expressed his grave disappointment in the incident. “I’m appalled at this senseless act. It’s so disappointing for the clubs and their young members who were so looking forward to playing on this new surface,” Mr Klisaris told the Herald Sun.

“It just defies belief that some individuals can behave so selfishly and ruin it for others.”

The official opening of the pitch was set to be early next month, with both young and older players looking forward to resuming training on the new grounds.

Security on the site has been increased; however, it remains unknown how long it will be before the pitch can be used.

Witness with information regarding the incident are urged to contact Senior Constable De Boer on (03) 9567 8910, Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or to submit a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
