Elderly parishioners from St Dimitrios Greek Orthodox Parish in Moonee Ponds are finally having their voices heard, after requesting a bus stop be placed at Keilor East Cemetery.

Essendon’s state Labor MP Danny Pearson said he was eager to help with the matter, submitting a petition on their behalf to the state parliament.

With the support of his sons, 77-year-old Chris Kouroupidis is responsible for the petition, having successfully gathered more than 450 signatures.

The petition, regarding route 476, highlights that the nearest bus stop to the cemetery is almost 750m away.

Considering many of the community’s elderly use the bus service to visit their loved ones at the cemetery, many of whom are in wheelchairs or using a walking frame, they are faced with the challenging task of crossing a freeway and Keilor Park Drive to reach their destination.

“It’s ridiculous – nobody from the church is able to visit their loved ones at the cemetery,” said Mr Kouroupidis’ son, Sandy.

“It would only have to go around 30 seconds or two minutes out of its way.”

According to Public Transport Victoria spokesman Daniel Waugh, the request is currently being reviewed, with the authority “working with the (state) government to investigate options for the bus services to Keilor Cemetery”.
