Former Brazil striker Pele, 77, who is booked to speak at two events with Les Murray in Australia next week, has undergone a procedure this week to remove kidney stones that were obstructing his urinary tract.

The football great had to cancel a book signing event in Santos on Thursday as he entered hospital, and might be unfit to travel to Australia in the coming days to meet fans.

Doctors say Pele is recovering well, but a spokesperson for the hospital didn’t say if he had been discharged yet.

Pele is booked to speak at two events on Wednesday and Thursday to honour veteran SBS broadcaster Les Murray’s contribution to the sport over 35 years.
