British coverage of the Tour de France is being streamed live to Australian audiences by pirates, hampering SBS’s exclusive content rights.

SBS lawyers have been notified of the second breach of coverage rights in two months, with their World Cup content being hampered after “isolated” instances saw the coveraged streamed on the internet from other providers.

SBS says it has not launched an investigation into the matter, but has passed on details to the football governing body FIFA.

Many are tuning in on set-top boxes sold in Australia that provide access to hundreds of channels from overseas via the internet.

SBS has paid for broadcasting rights to the Tour till 2023, and has been broadcasting the competition live since 1990.

SBS reportedly paid $25 million for the exclusive rights to the World Cup for two years.
