President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos on Thursday carried out a historic first visit by a serving Greek head of state to the islands of Kythera and Antikythera, for events celebrating the 151st anniversary since the Ionian islands were administratively reunited with Greece.

During the visit, Pavlopoulos was declared a honorary citizen of the island, at a special ceremony held in his honour.

Earlier, the president had also asked for details concerning the ongoing undersea archaeological exploration at the Antikythera shipwreck, which yielded such unique finds as the Antikythera Mechanism, and spoken with the few dozen permanent residents who live on the island in the winter.
