On his trip Down Under this month, Professor Costas Lapavitsas will be making the rounds, with a second lecture announced, this time on the subject of ‘Restoring Sovereignty to Greece’.

Organised by the Greek Community of Melbourne, the talks will see the well-known academic and professor of Economics explore why, after eight years of profound crisis and six years of bailout policies, Greece continues to find itself in a terrible state.

The country’s economy has shrunk dramatically, society has been badly hurt and the state has lost a range of capabilities and is in a severely weak geopolitical position.

Professor Lapavitsas will explore these matters in detail, concluding with his thoughts on why a fresh path is necessary, including the need to strengthen popular sovereignty domestically and restoring national sovereignty in Europe.

A lecturer of economics at the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) since 1990, as of 2010 his interests have honed in on the eurozone crisis.

In the last five years his work has had a considerable impact on the European debate and policy making, and last year he was elected as a Member of Parliament.

In addition to his lecture on ‘Restoring Sovereignty to Greece’, Professor Lapavitsas will be presenting a public seminar in English on ‘The Eurozone Crisis and the Greek Disaster’ on Wednesday 13 April at La Trobe University.

‘Restoring Sovereignty to Greece’, to be presented in Greek, will take place on Friday 15 April at the Ithacan Philanthropic Society (Level 2, 329 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne, VIC) at 7.00 pm. Attendance is free of charge.
