Last weekend’s NPL 1 Round 6 was a landmark round for a couple of clubs. Oakleigh Cannons broke their duck, scoring their first league win of the season following four consecutive draws and a postponed match. For the Cannons faithful it couldn’t have come at a better time, against their old rival and grand final nemesis, South Melbourne.

The Cannons had the lethal left foot of Dean Piemonte to thank for scoring the match winner against an under-strength South Melbourne who find themselves in 12th position on the league ladder following the loss.

On Sunday, the Cannons go in search of a second consecutive win of the season when they visit bottom of the table St Albans Saints.

Whilst the Cannons got their breakthrough win last weekend, neighbouring Kingston City stumbled for the first time when they lost 2-0 away to undefeated Pascoe Vale. City will look to bounce back on Monday evening in the south eastern derby against Bentleigh Greens at the Grange.

Both sides will be backing up from big 6-0 FFA Cup wins in midweek.

In Rd 7 action on Saturday evening, Heidelberg United will be looking to carry on the momentum of last week’s grand finish when they host a struggling North Geelong Warriors team which is still winless. The Bergers last weekend produced the most stunning comeback of the season to reverse a 2-0 deficit to Green Gully late in the match, to snatch all three points.

Trailing 2-0 with five minutes remaining, the Bergers stormed home with excellent goals to Athiu, Zahra, and Way, to take home the spoils and move into fifth place with a game in hand.

On Saturday Green Gully entertains South Melbourne, in what will be the final of South’s lopsided fixture schedule in which they have to wait till Round eight to play their first home match of the season. Following this round South plays 11 of their next 13 at Lakeside where fans and players will be able to enjoy the new social club facilities.

This weekend’s NPL 2 Rd 8 is a cross-conference round in which Northcote City will try to maintain their position on top of the NPL NW2 table when they host third-placed Eastern Lions.

At the other end of the table, Box Hill United will have a tough challenge on their hands to score a first win of the season, when they travel to third-placed Moreland City.

Meanwhile sixth-placed Brunswick City will try and bounce back from last week’s loss to a strong Moreland Zebras when they visit Springvale White Eagles who have suffered a recent form slump after a promising start to the season.

The State Leagues kicked off last weekend with impressive first round wins to Yarraville, South Springvale, and newly promoted Caulfield United Cobras who won their first ever game in State League SE1 1-0 against co-promoted team St Kilda SC, thanks to an Antun Vulic goal. Cobras coach Mike Kupinic selected a solid squad with several new names being added such as Antun Vulic, Jayden Allen, Jarrod Hastings, Reece Robic, Marcus Slimane, and Elias Tsintzas. Today the Cobras go in search of a second win when they travel to Manningham United Blues.

Likewise South Springvale travel to Mooroolbark in search of a second win on the road.

Malvern City, and FC Clifton Hill will be hoping to bounce back from season opening losses, when they travel to Casey Comets and Warragul United respectively.

In State League NW 1, Western Suburbs plays their season opener on Saturday when they travel to Westgate. The Suburbs have regained the services of 2015 Championship-winning coach Terry Antoniadis for this season.
