While it may not be an immediate concern for Melburnians in 2016, rising sea levels could pose a serious threat to the city by 2100.

According to a report by the Herald Sun, if climate change is not adequately addressed, suburbs the likes of Albert Park, Docklands and St Kilda could be swamped.

This information has been provided by website Coastal Risk Australia, which was launched on Friday.

The site gives people the chance to check the possible environmental impact of climate change on their area, and even on their own home.

“Our main goal is to raise awareness of how sea-level rise will affect the places we live, but this will also help all Australians prepare for change,” said website co-creator Nathan Eaton.

“We are anticipating the website to be used in planning at all levels of government, policy, conservation and community engagement.”

With Google technology and local tidal data, Eaton and partner Nathan Quadros have managed to chart the entirety of the coastline Down Under to see how it would affect the areas under three different scenarios.

According to information provided via the site, popular beaches such as Brighton, Ocean Grove and Bells could be a distant memory by the end of the century, if sea levels manage to rise by 0.74m.

And you can add various locations through Sydney, Brisbane, Cairns, Byron Bay and the Gold Coast to that list.

The general public can also found out the estimated monetary impact on the value of their home and their insurance premiums via a separate website named Climate Evaluation.
