As the investigation into murder victim Michael ‘Blue Eyes’ Gavanas’ death continues, so too does the plot thicken, with the discovery of his links to the Mokbel family.

Discovered by fishermen amongst mangroves on the Parramatta River, the 50-year-old was known to gangland figure Tony Mokbel and his brother Horty according to recent reports.

The victim’s brother Stephen is also associated with the notorious crime family. Stephen Gavanas is currently serving a jail sentence after being found guilty of trafficking ice with a known associate of the Mokbel family, Mohammed Khodr.

Stephen, along with Khodr was sentenced in the Victorian Supreme Court in 2010 over allegations of storing drug-related chemicals and equipment in Melbourne’s north.

Mr Gavanas’ funeral took place on Tuesday in Minchinbury, where his sister delivered an emotional eulogy written by his brother Stephen from his jail cell.
“To my big brother Micky, through circumstances I cannot be here today to say my last farewell.

“We lived at home in the same bedroom for the first 20 years-plus of our lives. When I was a kid I can remember I was scared of the dark but you made me feel safe by pushing your bed closer to me and that showed me how much you loved and cared for me,” she read.

“We had ups and downs over the years but you are my big brother and my best mate … I will love you forever.”

Police are continuing to investigate the background of the victim, who has been found to have held a criminal record in NSW, with officers “examining all aspects of Mr (Michael) Gavanas’ life”.

Authorities are still awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination, however, indications suggest Mr Gavanas had been dead for some time before being found.
