When a group of fishermen set out for their daily catch last Saturday, the last thing they expected to find was a dead body.

Discovered at just after 1 pm near a boat ramp on the Parramatta River in Sydney, the body has since been identified as Westmead resident Michael ‘Blue Eyes’ Gavanas.

Ryde Superintendent John Duncan told reporters the 50-year-old had been missing for three weeks, though his family had failed to report his absence to police.

The cause of death remains unknown while authorities await autopsy results, but a police source told The Daily Telegraph that Mr Gavanas “did not end up there of his own volition”.

“We’re looking at all possible lines of inquiry … at this point in time the family are working with police to try to piece together his movements over the last three weeks,” said Superintendent John Duncan.

Strike Force Cambronne is investigating the killing, with detectives looking into potential criminal links.

The victim’s sister Cecilia wrote an emotional tribute to her late brother: “I would like to say Micky, you know deep down my love for you never died.

I look back at the memories and that puts a smile on my face … I know that you and dad will be hugging each other and having a good old catch up. I love you Mick with all my heart,” she wrote.

Anyone with information regarding the death of Michael Gavanas should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
