New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras expressed his willingness to stay on as party chief following the January 25 election which saw New Democracy losing out to leftist SYRIZA which went on to form a coalition government with Independent Greeks.
Speaking at a meeting of conservative deputies in parliament, the former premier appeared set on not giving in to a request by MPs for an extraordinary congress, saying such an event would be a sign of “introversion.”
“Anyone who feels that raising the issue of party leadership is beneficial to the country and the party should say so right now and assume responsibility for setting the process in motion,” said Samaras.
“I’m not married to my position, but I’m not prepared to abandon the battle at such a difficult time for the country.”
